President of Global Health, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
President of Global Health at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where we work to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. Science is my passion, and I believe data is key to making meaningful progress against factors causing human disease.
Global Health leads the foundation’s efforts in research and development of vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics to address major global health challenges in the developing world. We also oversee the foundation’s strategies in HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, pneumonia, diarrheal disease, enteric and diarrheal diseases, and neglected infectious diseases. We work on platform technologies to accelerate development of global health solutions as well. All of this work occurs in collaboration with an international network of grantees and partners.
I joined the foundation in 2011 after holding a variety of roles in pharmaceutical development at Novartis, Pfizer and Parke-Davis. I am a native of South Africa, where I earned bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. I also studied philosophy as a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford before earning a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Chicago.
